Flight Fare Data Methodology
How Bangkok Flight Deals turns current fare options from Bangkok into useful, reproducible comparisons.
Method in brief
Bangkok Flight Deals summarizes currently available itinerary totals in THB. We keep one-way and roundtrip fares separate, calculate route- and month-specific distributions, expose sample sizes and refresh times, and label prices as observations rather than guarantees. Travelers always confirm the final fare and conditions with the booking company.

1. What the fare dataset contains
The serving dataset contains flight options returned by external flight-search and booking services for departures from Bangkok. Each record represents an itinerary that was available when checked. It includes the displayed total, travel dates, airports, airlines, stops, durations and fare type where supplied.
- One way: the displayed total covers the outbound journey only.
- Roundtrip: the displayed total covers the outbound and return journeys together.
- Currency: website comparisons are reported in THB (฿).
- Availability: a record is evidence of an observed option, not a held seat or price guarantee.
2. Why fare types are never pooled
A one-way ticket and a complete roundtrip are different products. Combining them would make minimums, averages and deal labels misleading. Every summary, monthly comparison and “typical fare” statement therefore keeps one-way and roundtrip evidence in separate series.
3. Statistical definitions
| Measure | Meaning on this site |
|---|---|
| Lowest | The minimum displayed total in the selected fare series. |
| Median | The middle available price after sorting the series. We describe this as “typical” because it is less sensitive to extreme values than the average. |
| P25–P75 | The middle half of available prices, shown as the typical range. |
| P10–P90 | A wider range that excludes the lowest and highest 10% of the series. |
| Average | The arithmetic mean. It remains available for context but is not treated as a prediction. |
| Fare count | The number of current itinerary options behind a summary. It helps readers judge the breadth of evidence. |
| Good-fare threshold | The 25th-percentile price for one destination and fare type. Three quarters of the currently observed options in that route series cost more. |
| Current floor gap | The percentage difference between the lowest current fare and the median for the same destination and fare type. A large gap is a prompt to inspect dates and itinerary quality, not a prediction. |
| Route-normalized month index | Each route’s monthly median divided by that route’s baseline median, multiplied by 100. The published monthly value is the median of those route-level indexes, so expensive and inexpensive destinations are compared on the same relative scale. |
| Budget reach | “Current low fits” counts routes with at least one observed fare within the budget. “Typical fare fits” counts routes whose median also falls within the budget. |
| Direct premium | The percentage difference between the direct-fare median and the all-itinerary median for the same route and fare type. A negative value means direct fares are lower in the current snapshot. |
| Typical range width | P75 minus P25, expressed as a percentage of the route median. Wider ranges indicate that comparing dates and itineraries may have a larger price payoff. |
4. Route, month and direct-flight comparisons
Route pages compare options for the same destination and fare type. Monthly pages group by outbound departure month. A one-way result is considered direct when its outbound journey is non-stop; a roundtrip is considered direct only when both directions are non-stop.
For the route-normalized month index, a route needs at least 20 current fares to establish its baseline and at least five fares in a month to contribute that month. The chart shows months covering at least 75% of the eligible route pool. Lower-coverage edge months remain in the table and CSV with their route counts and coverage percentages so readers can audit the limitation.
Airport, airline, stop and duration facts on a route page describe the current results represented on that page. They should not be interpreted as a permanent or complete airline schedule.
5. Deal and price-drop labels
Deal labels compare an itinerary with other available prices for the same destination and fare type. Price-drop labels require an earlier observation of the same public trip and route signature. Neither label predicts what the fare will cost later.
6. Refreshes, versions and reproducibility
Data-backed pages show the freshest timestamp available from the active serving snapshot. The Bangkok Flight Price Index also publishes its snapshot version and a downloadable CSV. A refresh can add, remove or reprice options, so different versions may produce different counts and distributions.
7. Destination and climate context
Stable destination descriptions, climate ranges and local-cost categories are kept separate from fare evidence. Climate values describe usual conditions, not live forecasts. When a planning claim relies on an external reference, its publisher and review date are shown alongside the relevant page evidence.
8. Known limitations
- The dataset is a market snapshot, not every fare sold by every airline.
- Availability and prices can change between the observation and booking page.
- Displayed totals may not include optional baggage, seats or payment fees.
- Route normalization reduces destination-mix bias, but month indexes can still change when route coverage or the available dates and itineraries change.
- Direct premiums compare current distributions within a route; they do not hold dates, airlines, airports, baggage or connection quality constant.
- A lower price does not imply a better itinerary; airports, travel time, stops and fare rules matter.
- Historical comparisons are descriptive and are not promises about future availability.
9. Editorial responsibility and corrections
The Bangkok Flight Deals data team maintains the calculation rules and explanatory copy. We do not invent authors, credentials or first-hand travel experience. Commercial commissions do not change the displayed statistical comparison.
If a definition, source or result appears inaccurate, email hello@bkkflightdeals.com with the page URL and the issue. We review reproducible correction requests against the relevant snapshot and update the method or copy when warranted.
