Düsseldorf's Altstadt (Old Town) is nicknamed 'the longest bar in the world' — and for good reason. Over 260 bars, restaurants, and brewpubs crowd into a compact riverside quarter that buzzes every evening of the week. The star attraction is Altbier, Düsseldorf's distinctive copper-colored, top-fermented beer served in small 200ml glasses by no-nonsense waiters called Köbes who keep replacing your glass until you place a coaster on top. The four great Altbier breweries — Uerige, Füchschen, Schumacher, and Schlüssel — each have atmospheric tap rooms in the Altstadt where the beer flows directly from the barrel. Beyond beer, the Old Town holds baroque churches, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen art museum, and the Burgplatz square overlooking the Rhine. For authentic dining, Naniwa serves the city's best ramen, while Yabase offers an izakaya experience that could pass for central Tokyo.
