Mexico City

Mexico City's Historic Center is built directly on top of the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec capital. The Zócalo, one of the largest public squares in the world, is the city's beating heart, flanked by the massive Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace (which houses spectacular murals by Diego Rivera). Standing in the square, you can feel the immense weight of the city's pre-Hispanic and colonial layers. Just off the square lies the Templo Mayor, the archaeological heart of the Aztec empire, where you can walk through the excavated ruins and visit a superb museum. The neighborhood is also home to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a stunning Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpiece that hosts the city's most important cultural events. Walking these streets is a journey through time, where grand colonial palaces now house modern shops and vibrant street markets.

Mexico City is arguably the best street food city in the world, and any visit should be centered around its 'puestos' (stalls). Tacos al Pastor—spit-roasted pork marinated in dried chilies and served with pineapple—is the city's unofficial dish. Head to neighborhoods like Condesa or San Rafael to find legendary stands where the thin slices of meat are expertly flicked onto small tortillas with a piece of pineapple following close behind. Beyond tacos, look for 'gringas', 'tlayudas', and 'tamales' sold from steaming pots on street corners every morning. For a more structured experience, visit Mercado de San Juan, a gourmet market where you can find everything from exotic fruits to edible insects (if you’re brave enough). The city's food scene is a massive, democratic affair where businesspeople in suits and construction workers in vests stand side by side, enjoying some of the most flavorful food on the planet.

For a change from the frantic energy of the center, head south to Coyoacán. This historic 'village within the city' was once home to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Kahlo’s former residence, the 'Casa Azul' (Blue House), is now one of the city's most popular museums, offering a deeply personal look at her life and work. The neighborhood’s cobblestone streets, leafy plazas, and traditional markets make it a perfect place for a slow afternoon walk. In contrast, the neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa offer a more European, cosmopolitan vibe. Known for their Art Deco architecture, sprawling parks (like Parque México), and trendy cafes, these areas are the cultural hubs of the city’s creative class. Roma Norte is particularly famous for its renovated mansions that now house bookstores, galleries, and some of the city’s top restaurants.

Bosque de Chapultepec is one of the largest urban parks in the world, often called the 'lungs of Mexico City'. It is double the size of New York's Central Park and contains two lakes, dozens of monuments, and some of the country's most important museums. At the top of the hill sits Chapultepec Castle, which offers incredible views down the Paseo de la Reforma and houses the National Museum of History. The park’s standout attraction is the National Museum of Anthropology, a world-class institution that houses the Aztec Sun Stone and thousands of artifacts from Mexico's diverse indigenous cultures. On weekends, the park is filled with families, street performers, and vendors selling everything from balloons to 'chicharrón'. It is a vital escape from the noise and concrete of the city, offering a space where history, culture, and nature collide beautifully.
